Älvsborg Fortress is an historic fortress found in Gothenburg’s beautiful archipelago. This fortress dates back to the 17th century when it was used to protect Sweden's to the North Sea and Atlantic Ocean.

Enjoy a scenic boat tour for 30mins to reach the island where you can explore the grounds and join in one of the free guided tours to learn more about the fascinating history of this important landmark.

Important notice: Due to seasonality the tours to Älvsborg Fortress will run until the 17th of August. Back again in June 2020.

Tour duration: Single Trip: 30 min. The whole duration of the trip is around 2.5 hrs. Tour only operates in the summer months – please check opening times.

PLEASE NOTE: Visitors cannot buy food and drinks in Älvsborg Fortress. Please bring your own provisions. Sandwiches and "fika" are available for purchase onboard.

The Experience:

A tour of Älvsborg Fortress is one of the most popular activities when visiting Gothenburg in the summer. Board the Strömma Skärgårdsbåtar boat tour from Lilla Bommen and journey out through the harbour to the historic sea fortress that dates back to 1653. The fortress is located on a tiny island at the mouth of the Göta River in the Rivo fjord. It was built to protect Sweden’s access to the North Sea and Atlantic Ocean, along with the original settlement, known today as Gothenburg.

It’s worth a visit to learn about this important player in Gothenburg’s history and on the island you can join in one of the guided tours, included for free, and discover more about this fascinating fortress whose stories are brought to life. The fortress itself is very beautiful and many visitors spend their time exploring the grounds and looking out into the archipelago to take in the breath-taking views of Sweden’s west coast.
